DISCOBOLUS

Discobolus captures the athlete at the critical instant before release — when strength, concentration and momentum have been compressed into a single gesture. Seen from above, the discus thrower turns within the circle, his body becoming the centre of an invisible orbit charged with potential energy.

The circular arena is more than a sporting boundary. It becomes a metaphor for discipline, control and the limits within which extraordinary performance is achieved. The athlete's elongated shadow echoes his movement across the ground, creating a second figure and emphasizing the fragile transition between intention and action. This interpretation closely reflects the artist's own description of the circle as an orbit holding energy at its limit.

The title also establishes a dialogue with the classical ideal of the Discobolus, yet Olesia shifts the emphasis from the perfected athletic body to the psychological intensity of competition. Her contemporary figurative practice uses sport as an expression of concentration, balance, and inner states rather than simply competition. 

Everything is contained within the circle — strength, tension and concentration — until the instant the athlete lets go.
